About The Project

France - Torcé-Viviers-en-Charnie

The plots to be reforested are located on a ZNIEFF (Natural Area of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest), south of the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park and Geopark. In 2018, the spruce plots were ravaged by the bark beetle, a xylophagous insect that can cause affected specimens to wither.

Four tree species will therefore be planted on these plots: thuja, douglas fir, the conifer best suited to the site, cedar, renowned for its resistance to heatwaves, and downy oak. Due to the density of deer on the massif, it is necessary to protect the plants. The planting of various species on these plots will revitalize the area, with the integration of species adapted to the site, which will increase the stands' resistance to disease and hazards.

The resulting forest will be more resilient, able to create a variety of habitats.

During the course of the project, both coniferous and deciduous trees were introduced to the plot. Indeed, diversifying tree species slows the spread of disease and insect attack, while making the forest more resilient. Adapted to the specific characteristics of the site, the species chosen will be more resistant to the vagaries of the climate and therefore to external aggression. The fortified and diversified stand will encourage biodiversity in the reforested plots and, in the long term, help combat global warming by storing carbon in the trees.
